Composed in 2014, Latitudes is a piece for amplified string quintet and percussion quartet that in its three large sections span a journey from one of the coldest places on Earth- Vostok Station (78° S, 107° E), to one of the hottest- Death Valley, California (36° N, 117° W). The piece slowly transforms to greater rhythmic intensity over the course of the piece like atoms moving from freezing temperatures to boiling temperatures. The piece is constructed from two main themes, representing a hot and a cold, and morphed together and apart and via processes of fragmentation and repetition, so as to blur where cold starts and hot begins.
